MICHEL KARKAR IS A VIRTUOSO TAILOR, DEDICATED TO CREATING MASTERPIECES THAT MEET EACH CLIENT'S COMPLETE SATISFACTION
Born in Beirut, then known as the ‘Paris of the Middle East’, MICHEL KARKAR has dressed discriminating gentlemen since the 1970s. Learning the essentials of bespoke tailoring under the tutelage of expert craftsmen in the cosmopolitan Lebanese capital, before honing his skills in Europe and North America. In 1990, KARKAR launched his signature atelier, MICHEL'S BESPOKE, in uptown Toronto where his refined approach and old-world elegance attracted a devoted clientele.
In 2013, PAUL DI PALMA, a then 23-year-old New Media graduate with a bachelor in Fine Arts, was hired to oversee the company’s website and social media. Immediately fascinated by the luxury and craftsmanship of bespoke tailoring, he embarked on an intensive, three-year mentorship under KARKAR that taught him the infinite particulars of sartorial refinement.
Scrutinizing DI PALMA'S designer but off the rack wardrobe, KARKAR would point out inferior details—second-rate fabrics, shoddy stitching, a lack of seam allowances, cheap buttons. Shadowing KARKAR on his appointments, DI PALMA observed KARKAR'S clientele at the showroom and in their homes; marvelling at their custom wardrobes, the finer quality of natural fibres, a subtle platinum pinstripe woven into a suiting fabric, the sumptuousness of a Vicuna overcoat, and overall, the unique personalisation of each garment tailored to reflect an individual’s character.
As their association expanded, KARKAR taught an eager DI PALMA everything he knew about the business while creating several bespoke pieces for him. Inspired by their superior quality, fit, and craftsmanship, and enthralled by the charm and creativity of the process, by the four-year mark, DI PALMA was conducting his own fittings while bringing in a younger clientele. In 2017, DI PALMA invested in Michel’s Bespoke, opening an elegant satellite showroom in Toronto’s THOMPSON HOTEL, where he introduced the business to a new, downtown client base.
